Inaugural Production
Edward Albee's
The Zoo Story and The Sandbox (Drama/Comedy)
Two One Acts
July 13, 2009 - August 9, 2009
The Zoo Story is one of Albee’s most produced and well known
plays.  Peter (Raymond K Cleveland) sits peacefully reading in the
sunlight Central Park.  Enters Jerry (Casey Chapman), an unkempt,
undisciplined vagrant who longs to communicate; Jerry describes
himself as a permanent transient.  Peter is neat, ordered, well-to do
and conventional.  Jerry enlightens Peter about the animalistic
tenants in his chaotic, homely rooming house and reminisces of his
encounter with the drunken Landlady and her mongrel guard dog
(Barry Eitel).   With provocative humor and unrelenting suspense,
Jerry tries to bring Peter down to his own atavistic level.

The Sandbox was the third one act written by Albee and was
dedicated to his adoptive Grandmother; whom supported his
artistic aspirations.  Mommy (Lyn Scott) and Daddy enter and remark
“Well, here we are; this is the beach.”  Mommy commands the
cellist onto stage to play.  Mommy and Daddy leave and return with
Mommy’s mother, Grandma (Patricia Tinsley). She is borne in by
their hands under her armpits; they dump Grandma into a nearby
sandbox.  From the start of this act, there is a Brad Pitt-esque
Young Man (Christopher Boyd) clad in swimming trunks performing
calisthenics.  Daylight becomes night and night becomes daylight,
Grandma realizes that the mysterious, cryptic athlete is much more
than local color, and his conversation with Grandma is, in fact,
prelude to his purpose.  He is “after all, the Angel of Death.”

“All of the arts, poetry, music, ritual, the visible arts, the
theater, must singly and together create the most
comprehensive art of all, a humanized society, and its
masterpiece, free man”
- Bernard Berenson (American art critic, 1865-1959)
InnateVolution Theater Productions presents the World Premiere of
April Smallwood’s Right As Rain—a moving exploration of sexuality, religion,
friendship and loyalty—directed by InnateVolution’s Artistic Director, Toma Tavares
Langston. The play about two teenage boys—one gay and one unsure—and their
struggle between religion and sexuality was part of InnateVolution’s New Play Circle
Series of staged readings.
“I don’t think people have to specifically
relate to the subject matter of Right As
Rain to enjoy it,” said playwright April
Smallwood. “When you get right down
to it, it’s really just about the struggle
we all must go through in deciding who
we are and who we think we should be.
“What attracted me to Right
As Rain was that it doesn’t
have a definite answer, a
typical resolution,” said
director Toma Tavares
Langston. “I love that April’s
writing allows the audience
to leave the theater having
experienced more than one
point of view.
